I guess this is why they have the Oscars at this time of year – January is tough, man. There is so little to talk about in pop culture except American Idol that the people who care about such things are forced to reassure us that there will be things to talk about in the future – Vulture ran a 100 item slideshow of things to look forward to, EW did a whole issue, and even the only podcast I listen to had their little “a look ahead” thing. Besides Real Steel, it looks like slim pickings. I’m a little worried.
But as Yoni told me today, hating on culture is boring.
Thus, aside from Weezy being out of jail (THA CARTER IV?!?!) the things I’m excited about are:
Born This Way is coming out in May. Will it be great? Will it take all of Gaga’s excesses and overly conceptual ideas and marry them to her dance-y if occasionally rote pop in an explosion of bizarreness and ill-thought out themes? Or will it be terrible? Either way, it probably won’t be boring.
Watch the Throne, sometime in summer. I mean, come on. Its like Superman and Batman teaming up to make shit awesome. Plus, at this point, any more Kanye is good Kanye.
Franchise movies with unweildy titles: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2, not to mention The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 (TTSBDP1, around these parts). Sorry. Also X-Men: First Class – I have a serious soft spot for the X-Men movies, and this one seems toned down enough to actually be fun and cool again.
Bossypants, publishing four days after my birthday – Tina Fey wrote me a book! All I’ve seen so far is the cover and the title, and already I’ve laughed more than I did at Chelsea Handler’s books oh burn.
The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism & Socialism, with a Key to the Scriptures – Theatuh?! Yeah, yeah, but I’m actaully making the trip to NYC and the whole ‘live seats in a room’ for this one. My love for Kushner knows no bounds. And given that this could easily have been the subtitle to Angels in America, too, I have high hopes.
Oh, and this new Avril song:
